Dungeon & Dragon Miniatures: Board Game Miniatures

Board Game Miniatures

As a Dungeon Master, having a huge collection of miniatures to represent the monsters and NPCs my players will encounter is an important aspect of being a DM for me.  Having miniatures that are durable are vital due to the frequent handling of the miniatures on the tabletop (i.e. metal and hard plastics tend to break easily). Affordability is another important consideration when adding miniatures to my collection.  Several board games include high-quality 28mm/32mm heroic scale miniatures.  eBay is an excellent resource for finding affordable board game miniatures.

The Giant Grub is from the Cthulhu Wars boardgame.  This is a fearsome monster taking up a 2” (50mm) square footprint and the table; this miniature could easily represent various large-sized horrors my players will encounter on the table.

Both Groups of Painted ‘Fatties’

The bulky zombies are ‘Fatties’ from the Zombicide board game and were sold in a collection of 5.  This is the second group of ‘Fatties’ I recently painted and could represent ghouls or ghasts on the tabletop.

Unpainted Generic Aliens

Painted Generic Aliens

The generic aliens are from the Zombicide board game, representing ‘walkers’ (rank-in-file zombies) in the sci-fi iteration of the game these miniatures are from.  These miniatures have an aquatic 1950s monster movie look and could represent Sahuagin or other such aquatic monsters on the tabletop.

The Rise of Moloch miniatures and Wizkids’ Carrionettes

These miniatures are a ‘Jack-n-the-box’ type monster wielding scissors.  The miniatures are the Rise of Moloch board game.  These were fun miniatures to paint and could represents Carrionettes (magical dolls/toys) on the tabletop.

Unpainted Rogues

Painted Rogues

These miniatures are female rogues from the Gloomhaven board game and could represent thugs, spies, assassins, and other such D&D monster-builds on the tabletop.

Dungeon & Dragon Miniatures: A Centaur Conversion

Dungeons & Dragons Centaur

I finished converting and painting a centaur for one of my fellow Dungeon and Dragons Adventurer’s League gamers, who described her character as having blue fur with white hair.  To come up with the appropriate figure for her character, I converted a centaur figure using a Wizkids Deep Cuts ‘Horse & Hitch’ model, and a Reaper Bones miniatures I received from Reaper Miniatures’ 2012 Bones Kickstarter.  The Wizkids Deep Cuts ‘Horse & Hitch’ model was ideal for the centaur’s body, as this model did not have a saddle/harness.  I removed the head of the horse, and the lower portion of the Reaper miniature; I attached the remaining parts of the miniatures together using a hobby mini-drill, wire, and super glue.  With some ‘green stuff’, I moulded a cape, and the continuation of the horse’s body.

The process of painting miniatures takes stages to complete, as it involves the process of layering paints, applying inks, dry brushing, added fine details to the figures, etc.  In this blog post, I have photographed the different periods of painting these miniatures to illustrate the stages involved in painting miniatures.
